Cat brooches have been popular for centuries. Cats were an important part of Ancient Egyptian culture and the goddess Bastet was often depicted as a cat.

During the middle ages cats had a bad reputation as they were often associated with witchcraft. Thankfully, that passed and they became popular household pets as well as popular depictions in art and jewelry.

The pebble smoothly carved as a recumbent beast with long curling ears and almond-shaped eyes beneath bushy brows, clasping in its jaws a sprig of peony and lotus, its paws tucked beneath the large arched body terminating in a curly tail, the stone of pale green tone with russet striations. 9cm (3 1/2in) long.

Qianlong

The Qianlong era was officially from 11 October 1735 to 8 February 1796. Seal marks are often written in iron-red or gilt as well as underglaze blue and they can also be incised, stamped or moulded in relief. It is not always possible to date antiques from this era with marks alone, as many Chinese marks were often used to honour the Emperors in later wares.

Jade is a gemstone / mineral which has been used predominantly in Asia and Latin America. There are two types of jade these being nephrite and jadeite of which jadeite is the rarer and can come in various shades. Animals have often been important symbols in Asian culture so it is not unusual to find jade carvings of animals or to find depictions of animals carved in jade objects.
